A Reset in Newport, and a New Era in Capital Formation

Last week, I had the opportunity to attend the Opal Family Office and Institutional Investor Conference in Newport—and I didn’t realize just how much I needed it until I was there.
Yes, the sessions were outstanding, and the setting was absolutely beautiful. But what truly made the experience meaningful was the time spent with thoughtful, driven, and generous people—both long-time friends and incredible new connections.
This was more than a networking event—it was a strategic and emotional reset. It reminded me how important community and aligned values are in an industry that too often focuses solely on deal flow.
The Capital Landscape is Shifting
What stood out most in Newport wasn’t just the content, but the clear emergence of a new generation of capital leaders—those stepping into decision-making roles within family offices, venture, and institutional platforms. Their approach is collaborative, data-driven, and refreshingly values-aligned.
But even amidst that energy, I continue to see some all-too-familiar challenges:
🚩 Founders Still Make Preventable Mistakes
Pitching without proper institutional framing
Sending underqualified BD reps to represent them with LPs
Talking at investors, not with them
Failing to follow up after initial interest
🧐 Family Offices Also Need Stronger Diligence Routines
Relying on founder charisma rather than structured analysis
Reviewing pitch decks instead of full data rooms
Entering cap tables without fully understanding syndicate dynamics
These gaps don’t just impact capital deployment—they weaken trust and slow down progress across the ecosystem.
